Parenting picky eaters (Part 1)

In this week’s video blog, I share my perspective on how to parent a picky eater.  First, from the health perspective, and secondly, from the conscious parenting perspective.  This video is intended to give a foundation for this topic, and also some food for thought (pun intended).  🙂

Tune in next week for some more specific how tos relating to helping parent a picky eater.

  1. I thought it was very interesting that you brought up the food allergies and intolerances. I used to be a very picky eater, mainly because I was very set in routines and I knew what I liked and didn’t have any reason to change it up. In high school I became intolerant to eggs, gluten, and casein (milk protein). When doctors had first brought up that my symptoms (fat lips and hives every day for a year) could be a food allergy, I laughed and said that I’ve eaten the same things my whole life and never had a problem before.
I have gotten better, mainly because of my husband actually. He LOVES food and loves to try new things. We tell our children that they have to try something before they can say that they don’t like it and try it multiple times. I have had to adopt that same rule for myself, since I can’t expect my children to do something that I myself will not do. I have to be a good example for them, in all aspects.
Thank you for sharing your insite, I look forward to the next installment!

    • Thanks, Heather, for your comments. You are doing several important things in your home – awesome! Modeling that behavior to your children is so vitally important, especially in the first 6 years of life (as that is when the subconscious mind is imprinting like mad). And how interesting that you experienced what I was referring to. It’s far more common than people think. Because while you had symptoms that were pretty noticeable, often there are many subtle repercussions that are not noticed, but are doing “damage” nonetheless.

As a quick aside, my brother was THE pickiest eater as a child, and now he eats such a wide variety of things, and absolutely LOVES to cook. What is interesting is that even though he was picky, in our home it was eat whatever is served, or don’t eat. He would grumble a bit, and ate somewhat lightly on those days we had things he wasn’t fond of, but he still ate and was able to get his varied nutritional needs met, along with realizing our parents were leading the way.
