Huh? My daughter telling ME about her birth?

We’ve all heard some incredible stories that children share when they are little.

Imagination?

Or something else?

A sweet, wonderful book called Before I Got Here: The Wondrous Things We Hear When We Listen to the Souls of Our Childrenby Blair Underwood (yes, the actor) might have you take pause if you’ve never thought about this dea.  It is a collection of stories and quotes from children, submitted by parents, that show they are more connected and intuitive than many people would think.  It is heartwarming to hear how children know far more than people give them credit for.

Being a conscious parent is knowing that you don’t know everything.  And that your little one, may even be more spiritually advanced than you are.  People refer to these intuitive, sensitive children as Indigo, Crystal, and Rainbow children.

For me, anytime my daughter would say something along these lines, I would ask her open-ended questions.  I wanted to hear her answers, and wanted them to be pure, without “leading the witness” if you will.

One of the most incredible conversations I ever had with her happened when she was exactly 2 ½.  We were in the car.  Out of the blue, she began a conversation (I wrote this down almost verbatim in my journal when we got home so that I could capture the words before I forgot them).

A:  “Remember when I was a baby in your tummy?”

Me:  “Yes, I do.  What was it like?”

A:  “A circle.”

Me: “What else?”

A:  “It was very, very dark.  And loud.”

Me:  “Was it warm?”  (oops, there I led the witness…but oh well!)

A:  “Yes.  I came out your bottom.”

Me: ” You did?”

A:  “Yes (laughing)….it was very very dark.  I need a flashlight.”

Me: “Why a flashlight?”

A:  “So I can see and get out your bottom.  I have to get out of here!”

Me: “Really?”

A:  “I ducked my head, Mommy…..I ducked my head.”

Me:  “Why?”

A:  “So I can get out of here!”

I had heard about such situations, and had read the book I mentioned, but to hear those words come out of my daughter’s mouth, I was literally stunned.  I had never discussed how she was born before this day, nor had she ever seen anything relating to a birth (that I knew of, anyway).  It was definitely more profound knowing I hadn’t ever talked with her about this concept, so the dialogue was pure.

I knew that I had to really honor this in my daughter, and do whatever I could to keep that connection alive.  I shared that example as a way to show you how you can take the little nuggets your children say, and learn probably more than you bargained for!

Has your child ever said anything to you that surprised you like this?  Please share!

  1. I love this! My favourite one from my 4 year old when I took her to learn Transcendental Meditation was this… When the instructor asked her why she wanted to learn to meditate she said “So that I can become one with the universe”. Wow!

    • Wow is right! That’s incredible…I say every day, that my little one is really MY teacher in so many ways. I’m so grateful to be here with her on this journey together. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  2. Hi Erika, I am just looking at my Babson connections pages. I love you site and your business. What a wonderful way to impact the world by better how we parent our kids. I hope you join the reunion committee! We want lots of kids to come and see where their parents went to grad-school.
